Orchard Gin is a single-shot distilled gin using traditional and native botanicals, such as juniper, coriander, orris root, cardamom, kawakawa leaves, nutmeg, and, of course, orchard pears. Experience juniper and citrus notes at the front of the palate which evolve in the mouth through subtle peppery kawakawa and earthy nutmeg tones to a sweet and lingering pear finish.
In May 2021, Nikki and Adrian relocated from windy Wellington to Ūpokongaro on the banks of the Whanganui River. The house, as it happened, came with two sizeable pear orchards, and that's when people started asking them, "what are you going to do with all the pears?" Turns out, the answer was, "gin".
Papaiti's signature Orchard gin emulates the fertile land of the Papaiti flats, the orchards that frame Nikki and Adrian's home, and the native bush on the banks of the Whanganui river. They're passionate about sourcing as many botanicals as they can locally and try to stay close to home: they use pears, kawakawa, lemon, lime, figs, quince, and rosemary all of which are growing right behind their house. They feel it really connects a creative product to its environment.
